Chapter 11

Lock Me in My Room

Thursday morning Beau was out waiting.  He was joined by Father Wanamaker and Jeremy, when David and Boris pulled in, with Matthew, Mark and Luke.  Jason came out and Jeff and Tommy arrived with Berto.  They were having a good time visiting.

All of a sudden a police car pulled up and Chief O’Brien jumped out. “Gentlemen, I’m afraid I will have to arrest you for creating a disturbance.”

Beau said in his best southern draw, “Why suh, whatever do you mean?  We’s just out for a lil’ jaunt before we get ready to go to wuk.”

“Young man, all the men in town are complaining about all of the studs that are running around half naked.”  Chief O’Brien said.

“But suh, I thought studs was the things that held buildings up.  We couldn’t hold anything up if we tried.  We’re just po starving misfits.”

Beau went to Chief O’Brien and said, “Suh, I’m going to have to report yah to my Grandmother for harasssin’ us po trash.  Now how about comin’ fo a little gruel in an hour.  That ways you can get to say goodbye to Grandma Ginny and Aunt Evelyn.  Now ya be there yuh hear?”

Everyone who didn’t know about the special relationship between the Chief and Beau were somewhat caught off guard and didn’t know exactly what was happening.  They began to get some idea when Beau hugged the Chief and took off running.

When they got back to the house, Beau started to fix breakfast had everything ready when everyone in including the Chief arrived.

When Chief O’Brien arrived he asked, “Mr. Benson, what happened to the po white trash I talked to this morning?”

Beau shrugged his shoulders and said, “They came back and packed up and left because they met some mean old grouchy man.”  Beau got up and gave Chief O’Brien a hug and said, “I hope that you enjoyed your breakfast sir.  I have to go get ready for work.”

Beau took off.  When he came down, Corky was waiting for him with David and Boris.  They stopped and got Berto and Matthew.  The guys washed the windows.  David and Beau started outside and Corky, Matt, Boris and Berto did the inside and then came out to help Beau and Alex.  When the windows were done, Beau had David vacuuming and Boris pulling off the tape.  The rest of the guys cleaned the bathrooms.  They were dressed only in their briefs and Beau had warned them to bring dry briefs.

Everything was cleaned except the kitchen.  Beau took the guys to a Chinese buffet.  After lunch they went to the Shoppe and Beau had the guys pulling Mrs. Dover’s new furnishings so they could be loaded onto the two trucks to be delivered the first thing Friday morning.

David and Boris left to get Luke and Mark and Mrs. McDowell to make sure the two young guys had everything that they needed for the trip to the white waters.  When they left, Beau said, “Tell everyone the pool will be open at 4:00.  So be there, since I need you to help with the life guarding.”

The guys were working when Mrs. Weaver came and got Beau.  The Coopers and Weavers were waiting for him.  Beau, between the three big sales this week, the commission is almost $9000.00.  What do you want us to do?”

“Let’s go get the other seven guys and I’ll explain what’s going to happen.  Expect some flack.”  Beau said.

Beau went and brought the guys back and had them sitting at the table and started. “Guys, you know that there were some very large sales this week.  Here’s how we’re going to distribute the commission.  Each of us will get a $1000.00 commission plus your regular minimum hourly salary for when you were working here at the store.  You will also get your commission on any other sales you made, and I will be paying you for any hours that you worked at Mrs. Dover’s house.  Are there any questions?”

Mickey said, “Beau, that’s very generous of you, but the commission from the big sales should be yours alone.  You did all of the work.”

“Michael, look at it this way.  If I hadn’t made those big sales, you would have had the opportunity to sell the things and get the commission.”  Beau said.

Berto said, “Benson, there is something wrong with that logic.  It would probably take us a year to sell all of those goods.”

“Roberto, you don’t know that.  Now we need two people here at the store in the morning.  I need the rest of you at the Dover house to unpack.” Beau said.

Mr. Cooper interrupted.  “Guys, why don’t you all help Beau in the morning and we’ll drop your checks off at the Dover house.  Now come on, let’s get out of here so you can go swimming.  You all have been working hard all week.”

The front door opened and a couple came in.  “Is there a Mr. Benson here?”

The other guys all turned to Beau and pointed.  Beau went to the couple.  “Hi, I’m Beau Benson. How may I help you?”

“We were told you could help us find some things for our rental house and our new home.  Could you show us around?  We are the Lloyds.”

“I’d be delighted to, but give me a minute.  Hey guys, you go ahead and make sure you get to my house so you can open the pool.  I’ll be there as soon as I can.”

Mrs. Cooper went with Beau and the Lloyds as they started to walk through both show rooms and Beau said, “There is much more in the storage areas if you don’t mind the clutter.  It’s been a zoo around here with things coming and going.”

After they had been through all of the areas, the Lloyd’s had selected a house full of good used furniture for their rental and two rooms of antiques for the new house.  Mr. Lloyd asked, “Mr. Benson, can you tell me how much damage we have done?”

Beau looked at Mrs. Cooper and she gave him the go ahead and he said, “$52,500.00.”

“Are you sure?  I thought it was closer to $75,000.00.”  Mrs. Lloyd said. “In that case I would love that beautiful mahogany dining room set that is in the storage area.”

“Ma’am, that set was in my former neighbor’s house.  She and her husband never had any children, so it has always been taken care of.  We will let you have it for $7500.00.  That would make your total an even $60,000.00.”

“I’m going to put your names on the sold signs while you finalize the sale with Mrs. Cooper and Mrs. Weaver.”  Beau said, as he got busy.

“Beau, could we pick the items up on Saturday?  I’ll send my delivery trucks to pick the items up.”  Mr. Lloyd asked.

Beau said, “I’m leaving for Colorado early Saturday.  But I am sure I can get some of my friends to be here to help you and your people load.  I hope you enjoy your furnishings.”

After the Lloyd’s left, Beau turned to the Coopers and the Weavers and said, “People, I am not working tomorrow, and I will gone for a week.  I’ll remind the guys that you would like two of them here as much as possible.  They are only 13 or 14 so they all need some down time.  Jonathan will be back from his cruise in the middle of next week.”

“I have several things I want you to consider while I am gone.  First thing, you should check around and see if you can find some estates or farms that about to be sold and buy the furnishings lock, stock and barrel.   The other thing I would like you to consider is that you change the store hours from 10:00 to 4:30.  If you think about it, that is when the most people come in and then you could open one night each week to give the people who work during the day the opportunity to come in.”

“That would give the guys an opportunity to work even if they were involved in sports.  Of course they would be required to maintain good grades.”

“Now can someone please take me home so I can make sure that everyone is okay?” Beau asked.

Mr. Weaver said, “Beau, I’ll take you home.”  As they were riding along Mr. Weaver asked, “How would we go about finding out who might want to sell their things.  We can’t go house to house asking.”

“Sir, I think that you and your wife or the Coopers should go to visit the little towns around and eat where the locals hangout and casually let it be known that you are interested in buying estates and that you could probably do better than an auction.  Once people find out that you are making a fair offer, they will start coming to you.  I have the feeling that you will be so busy that you may need to expand some more.”  Beau said as he was crawling out.

Mr. Weaver asked, “Beau, you won’t let anything happen to Chip will you while you are in Colorado?”

Beau stopped and said, “Sir, I won’t let any harm come to Chipper.  If I have to dive in front of him I will.  Dylan, Carole Anne and Spencer feel the same way and that’s why we are taking Ranger.  See you later sir.”

Beau went and checked in the pool area and was besieged by people.  Spencer came to him and said, “Beau, I don’t know who to take to the ranch without hurting someone’s feelings.”

Beau whispered, “”I have the same problem.  Why don’t we take Jeremy and Roddy since they also have lost their parents?”

“Good thinking.  Why don’t you clear it with their Dads and Grandmother?” Spencer asked.

Beau said, “Don’t you think we should check with the two guys first.  They may not want to go.”  Beau blew his whistle and yelled, “Jeremy and Roddy, we want to talk to you now.”

The two guys came over and asked, “What did we do wrong?”

Beau pulled them close and said, “You did nothing wrong.  We want you to go to a dude ranch with us for a week?”

Roddy asked, “What’s a dude ranch?”

“It’s like a big farm where you can ride a horse and do all sorts of things like swim and have a good time.” Spencer answered.

Jeremy asked, “Who else is going?”

Beau answered.  “Spencer, Chip, Trey, Ranger and me.  Carole and Dylan are taking us.  It’s Carole Anne’s home.”

Roddy said, “I’ll go.”

Jeremy said, “I would like to go, but we need to ask our Dads and our Grandmama first.”

“Let’s go talk to you Grandmama right now.”  Beau said as he got on his knees and asked, “Grandmama, would it be okay if we took Roddy and Jeremy to a dude ranch on Saturday for a week?  Carole Anne and Dylan have invited us and we are permitted to bring a guest and we chose Roddy and Jeremy.”

Mrs. Wanamaker looked skeptical and asked, “Who all is going and why did you choose my two grandsons?”

Spencer said, “We are Chip, Trey, Ranger Beau and me.”

Beau continued, “We didn’t know who to choose to be our guest so we thought maybe it would be a good experience for Roddy and Jeremy since we have so much in common.”

The two boys were watching their new Grandmama but Beau could tell by the glint in her eyes that it was okay.  She finally said with a frown on here face, “Well I suppose it would be okay if you promise to bring them back in one piece.  I’ll just tell their Dad’s that they have been kidnapped.  Now what clothes do they need?”

Carole Anne and Dylan had arrived and Beau went and got them.  “C.A. and Land, Spencer and I have decided to take Roddy and Jeremy as our guests on Saturday.  Their Grandmother as well as the rest of us need to know what we should pack.”

Reg and Neal Crosby had arrived to pick up the guys and everyone was listening to what Carole Anne said.  “They basically need very little, so it should be relatively easy and they could do laundry anytime they need at no cost.  But you might need to pack Ranger’s food, food dish and water dish so we can have it accessible on the trip.”

Beau closed the pool at 5:30.  He and Jason covered the pool since we were to be at the club at 6:30.

We all arrived and it was a small party compared to what we were becoming accustomed to.  It was just Mrs. T., Aunt Cora, Kenny and Drew, Uncle Lyle and the three of us.  Rea and the Edmonds arrived with Mitch and Barbee.  The final contingent was Beau with Aunt Evelyn, Ginny, Josh, Ben and Jason along with Carole Anne and Dylan.

The waiters served a sit down dinner which was excellent.  Beau got up and thanked the Peoria people for coming, told them to hurry back.  He thanked them for all their help and for everything that they had done.

Everyone stood and applauded.  We left the club and Tommy drove Ginny’s van home.  The guys got Aunt Evelyn and Ginny settled.  Beau was sitting between Ben and Josh telling them about everything that had happened.

There was a light knock on the door.  Mrs. McDowell and Judge Leavitt were standing there.  Beau ushered them in and asked, “Is there a problem?”

“Yes.” said both ladies.

Beau said, “So spill.”

Mrs. McDowell said, “Beau, we have several things that we need to discuss.  First, our son and daughter are upset that Mark and Luke are going with David and Boris.”

Beau held up his hand, “Ladies, both Mark and Luke are going to come back very self sufficient young men.  They are going to learn that everything isn’t handed to them on a silver platter.  I can also promise you that neither Uncle David nor Uncle Boris will let anything bad happen to either of the boys.  I can also assure you that neither of them has any desire to take advantage of the boys.  Next issue.”

“Why didn’t you pick Matthew to go and is he really making as much money as he says?”  Judge Leavitt asked.

“Ladies, Matthew is a very secure young man.  He knows who he is.  He doesn’t need this experience.  Uncle David and Uncle Boris will be good role models for Mark and Luke and Matt already knows what he wants to do.”

“Also, I need to have Matthew here to fill in for me while I’m gone.  Yes, he probably has made more than 80% of the people in Fremont this week.  Your job is to make sure that he uses it for his future which I am sure he will do on his own.  I pick my friends very carefully and all the guys he will be associating with are the best.”

“Now ladies, is there anything else we can help you with?  It’s been a long day and tomorrow is already busy and I haven’t even thought about packing for my trip.”

Beau escorted the ladies to the door and hugged them and said, “Ladies, just love your grandsons unconditionally, but demand that they do and be the best they can be.  I’m sure that I have become a significant person to the oldest three, but they need an adult they can go to that they trust.”

The ladies left and Beau just plopped down between his Dads and lay against them.  “Dads, I guess you had better start locking me in my room.  Everyone is going to wind up hating me.  Please don’t let what happens to me reflect on Jason.”

Both guys hugged Beau, “Jason already realizes that you are trying to do too much.  He told me on the way to the Baxter house this morning we needed to make you slow down.  He is truly concerned that you are working too hard and something bad is going to happen to you.   He also knows that he isn’t as talented as you and accepts it.” Ben said.

“Now son, go to bed before someone else comes bopping in.  Things will look better in the morning.  Love you son.”  Josh said.

Beau kissed them both and disappeared.

To be continued...

Feedback always welcome:

Editor's Notes:

Yet again we have seen another wonderful chapter. What is with those grandparents? Haven't they read the rest of the story?  By now they should know that Beau knows what he is talking about.  I can sort of understand Mrs. McDowell not quite being with everything yet, but the judge has seen Beau in action over and over. You would think she would say something in his defense.  Oh well, nothing will satisfy some people I guess.
