Chapter 2
Being Gay

The hotel room was indeed a lot more satisfying than the glory hole.  Over the next few Friday’s David introduced John to anal sex, rimming, and golden showers, as well as “doing it” in different positions.

John was conflicted.  He was falling in love with David.  He knew that David was unavailable, and too old for him, so he tried to restrain his feelings.

One evening he asked him, “How old is your Wednesday evening fuck buddy?”

He’s about your age, give or take a year.  Why do you ask?”

“You said that you thought we would like each other.  I think I can get away next Wednesday evening.  Do you think I could join you?”

“Damn right you can,” David said enthusiastically.  “I can’t wait.  See you Wednesday, same time and same hotel.  You made your decision just in time.”

“What do you mean?” John asked.

“Well, he’s a major league baseball player.  He has to go on the road next week, and won’t be available to us for a while after that.  Please remember, John, he has to be as discreet as we two.”

“Wow, a baseball player, a man after my own heart,” John said with a big grin on his face.  “I can’t wait to meet him.  What team does he play for?”

“The Yankees, I think”

“Great, a hometown boy; this is so exciting.  I’m going to meet him anyway, so please tell me his name.  I’ll be as discreet as you want me to be.”

“I’ll introduce you two properly on Wednesday.”

John was nervous and fidgety all weekend, and he certainly could not concentrate on his classes at the beginning of the week.  He had no desire to go out with Matt, and finally Matt asked him what was bugging him.  He just shook his head and said nothing.

At last it was Wednesday evening and John found himself going up to the room David had reserved.  David opened the door.  He and a young man were naked.  They pulled him in and locked the door.  John and the young man looked at each other, and the baseball player shouted out, “John Lowell is that you, you SOB?”

It took John a moment or two to recognize Phil Hannigan.  They were not only on the same high school baseball team, but Phil was the guy John had a one night stand with, and who took his virginity.  Although Phil was naked, the two men hugged each other.

Finally, they disengaged and John said, “I’m really pissed at you, you know.”

“Why?”

“After that one time, why didn’t you ever want to have sex with me again?”

“Sorry about that,” Phil said, “but I was banging your uncle regularly and we needed to keep our secret, so I dropped you for fear of saying something accidentally.  I figured if Matt wanted to tell you, he would.  Hell, we still get together when I’m in town.”

John was close to exploding.  The man he loved and desired most in the world was gay.  He hated himself at that moment for not having had the guts to tell Matt the truth.  But Matt had kept his secret also.  Suddenly he wanted to run out of the room and right into Matt’s arms, but he didn’t want to disappoint Phil and David.  Besides, he thought it would be fun to relive his “first time.”

It was more than fun.  It was the first three way for Phil and John, and they were amazed at the infinite possibilities and positions.  When John was the middle man, he thought he had entered into gay heaven.  Phil reported feeling the same way.

Eventually the session was ended, and the three men promised to get together again at the first opportunity.  David and John agreed to see each other as usual on Friday night.  John intended on confronting Matt this very evening, so he wasn’t so sure if he would indeed make Friday night’s date.

Time was passing torturously slow for John.  He sprang for a cab to get him home quickly.  When he entered the house there was a big celebration going on.  Matt thrust a champagne glass at him.

“What’s going on?” John asked.

“I did it, John.  I did it.  I landed a big role in a Broadway revival of “Oklahoma.”  I’m playing Will Parker, and the director wants me to understudy the lead.”

“You’ll have to perm your hair to play Curly,” John said, and the two men laughed and hugged each other.  John hugged Matt tighter than he ever had before.  In the past he had been afraid of getting hard, but he didn’t care now.

“Let’s go to Paddy’s Irish Pub to celebrate,” Matt said.

Carla and Craig turned them down, and the two young men started the three block walk to the pub.  It was late when they got there, and they found a rare table for two.  As soon as they were seated and sipping their beers, John could not restrain himself.  “Have you ever heard of Phil Hannigan?” he asked.

Matt froze, but finally he said, “Yeah, he plays for the Yankees”

“Sure he does, but how about the fact that you two have been banging each other since high school days?”

This time Matt didn’t recover from his freeze so fast.  After a long silence, he asked, “You know about me, don’t you?”  He started to cry.

“Relax, Matt,” John said.  “I’ve been banging him too.  Shit Matt, I love you more than anybody else in the world, and I never had the guts to tell you.”

“I love you more, and I’m just as guilty as you are for keeping it a secret.  We’re going to do it now,” Matt said.

“Do what?” John asked.

“Fly out of the nest, and get an apartment together.”

“That’s a given.”

“Will you sleep with me tonight?” Matt asked.

“I want to, but what about Craig and my mother.”

“They love us. They’ll just have to deal with it.” Matt rationalized.

All this happiness was made possible by two degrees of separation, and a glory hole.

The next morning, Matt and John were wrapped up together basking in the afterglow of superior love making.  John decided to tell Matt all about David and how he came to meet Phil.

“You’re a little devil,” Matt kidded John.  “You’re getting more nookie than I am.”

“I have a standing date every Friday evening with David.  How’d you like to join us tomorrow?  If you want, I’ll change that to ‘I had a standing date with David every Friday,’ past tense.  It’s your decision.

“No way am I leaving you alone tomorrow evening.  You’ll be having all the fun, and I’ll be home twiddling my thumbs.  Until the show opens, I want to join you.  David was responsible for us getting together.  If it weren’t for him, we could have gone on fooling each other forever.  I want to personally thank him, and we’ll make him very happy together.”

“So we have a date for tomorrow evening then?” John asked.  “In the meantime, I think Ill get back to my bedroom.  Let’s try to keep this from my mother and your brother until we rent a place together.  Then we’ll tell all.”

“Good idea,” Matt said, as John scurried down the hall to his room.

The next evening the lovers met each other at 5:30 in front of the hotel.  David opened the door expecting to see John alone.  He was shocked to see another man.  He let them in and locked the door.

“Who’s this gorgeous hunk of man, John?” David asked, ogling Matt.

“His name’s Matt Burns.  He’s my boyfriend, my lover and now my partner.  I figured that with Phil away, Matt could fill in.  He and Phil have been banging each other for years, so it makes perfect sense.”

“It’ll be my pleasure to share a bed with you and John if only for a couple of hours,” David said to Matt, and he jumped on the queen-sized bed.  Matt and John stripped rapidly and joined him.

For the next hour and a half, they fucked and sucked in every combination.  Each of them had a turn in the middle, and each came twice, even David.  As they were dressing, David said, “I hope my wife doesn’t want to have sex tonight.  I’m completely done out.  Thanks guys.”

*****

Matt started rehearsals the following Monday, and sometimes the cast rehearsed far into the night, so he couldn’t accompany John to the hotel for the foreseeable future.  He didn’t mind at all that John was fucking David.

Craig was terribly disappointed that John didn’t apprentice with his firm.  John explained that he thought it best that he clerk for a stranger until he finished law school and passed the bar exam.  “After then, if you still want me, I’ll come aboard,” he promised.

John was really afraid that when he and Matt moved out to live together, Craig might not want him at all.  He and Matt had every intention of telling Craig and Carla, the real reason they were living together.  Their plan was to wait until after the show opened.  Matt felt that he needed good reviews to feel secure in his job.

The reviews were better than good; they were glowing.  The New York Times critic particularly praised Matt for his beautiful baritone instrument and for his dancing.  He wrote: “Will Parker can be portrayed as a simpering, love sick, Caspar Milquetoast, but Matt Burns brought him to life, and converted him into a strong man, who is madly in love, the kind of man you would expect a pioneer to be.”

The day after opening night, Matt and John went apartment hunting.  They found a lovely one bedroom in a high rise on First Avenue in the sixties.  They gave the rental agent first and last month’s rent and a security deposit.
The next day they went to a discount furniture store and furnished the entire apartment.  Then they went to a Walmart and purchased everything a good kitchen and bathroom should have.

Content with their efforts, they decided to tell Carla and Craig that they were moving out and why.  They were both scared to death.  They agreed that John, who was a lawyer, should drop the news, and he did … during dessert.

Carla started to cry.  Craig’s neck turned red and the color traveled up to his forehead.

“I’ve suspected this about you two for a long time and I kept hoping I was wrong.  I should say, I prayed I was wrong,” Craig said sadly.  “I’m glad you guys are moving out so I don’t have to kick you out.  That would be stereotypically stupid.  I want you to know that I am grieving.  I will never approve of what you are doing, but at the same time I love you both very much, and I’ll never turn my back on either of you.”

Matt and John started to snivel.

“Stop crying and I suggest you start packing,” Craig said, but he said it kindly.  It was not meant to be a command.

“Our furniture won’t be arriving until Saturday.  Could we stay here until then?” Matt asked.

“I guess so,” Craig said, but please sleep in separate bedrooms.”

“Yes sir,” the two men said in unison.

Suddenly, Craig broke out laughing.

“What’s so funny?” Carla asked.

“I just realized that John is now my stepson and my brother-in-law, and Matt is my brother and stepson in-law.  Ain’t that a hoot?”

With that little bit of banter, both young men were relieved.  They realized that Craig was taking the news better than he was making out.  Carla was still crying, and Craig was trying to lighten the mood.

“Do you still want me to join your firm when I finish law school and pass the bar exam?” John asked.  He was scared stiff of the answer.

“Pass it, and then we’ll discuss it,” Craig answered.  His non-committal response disturbed John.  Matt was disturbed also.
