Chapter 5
The Deception Continues

The weeks dragged on slowly for John.  He missed Matt terribly, and immersed himself in work to compensate.  He also put on a happy face with Craig and David, but his heart was breaking, especially since the long lunch hours continued.

Every day he agonized whether he should tell Matt or not.  He really wanted to, but in the end, he decided to wait until his tour was over.

The only good thing that came of the whole messy situation was that Louis became a good client during the day, and after business hours he and John had sex, but sometimes it was more like they were making love.  It was merely to fulfill their body needs, and they both knew it.  They got so comfortable with each other that once, and only once so far, Louis got so horny that he was able to fuck John to conclusion without falling out.  The poor man couldn’t stop crying, nor could he stop thanking John.  On his part, John realized that what they were doing was a blessing for Louis.  He was doing a good deed, and it made both of them very happy.

Somehow, it finally happened.  The tour ended and Matt came home.  He was not idle for a moment.  Immediately, upon returning to New York, he got two offers to star in upcoming musicals.  He was studying both scripts and weighing his options, when his agent called.  He got an offer to play the romantic lead in an upcoming big budget movie.

Matt didn’t want to accept it because it would mean another long separation from John, but John finally convinced him that it was the chance of a life time, and he had to take it.  So once again they would be separated for about five months.   Louis was the only one who was happy about that.

During the short time that Matt was home, John wanted to tell him about his brother and David a thousand times, but he couldn’t bring himself to do it.  Matt left for Hollywood, and a few location shots, still not knowing about the illicit and deceptive love affair.

Since he didn’t have the nerve to tell Matt, John began to wonder if he had the guts to confront David and Craig.  He didn’t think he could do it, but even if he did, what would he say to them?  It was not his place to demand they stop seeing each other.  He couldn’t threaten them with exposure to their wives.  They certainly knew that he would never do that.  With no viable plan presenting itself, John just let things ride exactly as they were.

He tried to look the other way when Craig and David went to lunch together.  He wanted to convince himself that he didn’t notice a thing.  One day they were gone for over three hours, and now John got pissed again.  Maybe they had enough left over for their wives, but they were certainly neglecting their work, and that was impacting on the practice.  He became convinced that it was necessary to confront them, and try to convince them to knock it off.  If they couldn’t knock it off, then they needed to modify their behavior to a very large extent.

In the end he didn’t have to do or say a thing.  All of a sudden, they stopped going to lunch together, and occasionally Craig would invite John to have lunch with him, and sometimes he would take his wife, Carla.  John believed Craig and David had a falling out, but he was wrong.  The firm’s most senior partner wasn’t blind to their behavior.  He called them into his office one day and read them the riot act.  They curtailed their daytime activities, but suddenly they had to work late, or that’s what they told their wives.  Of course, they weren’t grinding away at all, but were spending a couple of hours at the hotel.  They tried not to overdo the late nights, and so they restricted their trysts to once every two weeks.  This way they hoped that nobody would get suspicious, as the boss had become over their long lunches.

John didn’t know about their evening rendezvous, and he allowed himself to believe that their affair was over.  He breathed a sigh of relief that he didn’t have to tell Matt.  The burden of his secret remained with him.  For the moment, it seemed that Craig and David’s new secret life was successfully covered up.

No matter how clever a deception may be, sooner or later the truth will come out.  Late one afternoon, Carla knocked on John’s office door.  “Come in,” he said, and he was shocked to see that it was his mother.  She hadn’t gone for the day, and John was surprised.  Carla closed the door, and sat down on one of two chairs facing John’s desk.

“What’s up, Mom?” he asked with a smile, even though his insides began to enter panic mode.

“I need some legal advice,” she said.  Carla was a paralegal.  She could have done her own research, so John’s apprehension was further heightened.

“How come you aren’t asking Craig?”  John suspected the reason, but he asked anyway.

“Because it concerns him.  He could not adopt an independent attitude.”

“Something’s going on with you and Craig, and you expect me to stay neutral and independent,” John grumbled, hoping his mother would change her mind, and not discuss the situation with him.

“Yes, something is going on,” Carla said.  She started to cry.  “Craig is having an affair.”

So Carla chose to discuss the situation after all.  John’s blood ran cold.  “Are you sure?” he asked.  “Do you know who it is?”  He wanted to find out just how much his mother knew.

“Yes, I sure do, and it’s quite a shock.  Have you ever suspected any infidelity from Craig?” she asked John.

He shook his head vehemently.

“Then this will come as a big shock to you also.  Craig is having an affair with David Smith.  Yes, that David Smith, his partner.  When we married, I had no doubt that he was straight.  I pray I didn’t do anything to make him become gay.”

“Relax, Mom, it’s not possible to turn anyone gay, or straight for that matter.  What makes you think that Craig is cheating on you anyway?  Did you catch him in the act?”

“In a way.  Craig tells me that he’s working late about once every two weeks.  He always tells me to go home and not wait around the office for him.  A few weeks ago, I got to the bus stop, and I panicked.  I either lost my purse, or I forgot to take it with me when I left the office.  I ran all the way back, and was shocked to find the office was deserted.  There was nobody there.  I retrieved my purse, and at first I thought nothing of the deserted office.  I assumed Craig had gone out for a bite before getting back to work.

“When I had time to think about it, I began to believe that maybe he was having an affair.  The next time he told me he was working late, I waited downstairs where I couldn’t be seen.  Moments after I left, Craig and David came out of the building and hailed a cab.  I waved down another one and followed them.”

John was struck dumb.  His mother had done just what he had done.  She spied on Craig.  Also, it was obvious that she was unaware of the long lunches they used to take.  The late nights finally alerted her.

“They stopped in front of a hotel, Carla continued, “and went inside together.  I needed to get my head on straight so I told the cab driver to take me home.  I didn’t exactly catch them in the act, but I saw enough to put two and two together.”

“Why are you telling me all this?” John asked.

“I want you to recommend a good divorce attorney, and I’m resigning from this firm tomorrow morning.”

“Please, Mom, don’t do anything rash.  Talk to Craig first.  Maybe he and David chose to work in the hotel because the office is too distracting.”

“”Don’t be so naïve.  You’re smarter than that.”

“Okay, you win.  I’ll recommend an attorney to you. We went to law school together.  I want to tell Matt, but I’m afraid to.  They’re wrapping up the film next week.  I’ll tell Matt when he comes home.  I don’t want him all upset, and ruining the romantic comedy.”

“Yes, darling, wait until he comes home.”

“I don’t think you should go home alone,” John said.  “Have dinner with me, and then I’ll take you home.”

“Yes, I will.  Thank you.  I’m grateful that the house belongs to me.  I’m going to tell Craig to move out right away.  He betrayed me, and with a man no less.  That’s unforgivable.  He may ask you and Matt to put him up.  If you do, don’t tell me about it.”

“I should think he’d be too embarrassed to ask us for sanctuary.”

“You two are the only family he has.  He can’t ask David to put him up.  David has a family of his own.”

“Are you perfectly sure, Mom.  I honestly can’t believe it.  Craig is so macho.  He’s an alpha male, for God’s sake.”

“May I remind you, darling son, that you and Matt are macho alpha males also.”

“I guess, “John said.

When John met Matt at the airport, they hugged each other.  They held the hug for a good five minutes, and they were both sobbing a little.  The fact that they were reunited brought tears to both of them.  In the car going home, Matt observed that something was bothering his soulmate.

“I can tell that you’re dying to tell me something,” Matt said, “and because you’re acting like you’re afraid to tell me, I’m really frightened now.  Please, spill the beans.”

“Could we wait until we get home?” John asked.  I’ll make us some coffee or hot chocolate.  I’ve got some Danish pastries to go with it.”

“If that’s how you want it, I’ll have to be patient.”

When Matt entered their apartment, the first thing he saw was his brother.  Craig was sitting on the sofa, and he looked terrible.  His eyes were red and swollen, and Matt could tell that he had been crying.

He was afraid to ask, but he did.  “What are you doing here Craig?  Shouldn’t you be home with Carla?”
