Chapter 9

Before assuming their duties on the plantation, Vic and Jon needed to take care of one bit of unfinished business.  They decided to visit London and personally bid goodbye to Amy and Mary.  It would probably be the last time they would ever see each other.  They were also anxious to meet Jon’s nieces and nephews.  Vic decided to bring the annulment documents to Amy personally.

They were met at the pier by Mary and her husband James, who readily admitted that Amy was very frightened at seeing Vic again after having finally accepted his death.

“I will bless her marriage and make it as painless for her as possible,” Vic said, “and our visit will be short.  We have much work to do back home.”

Mary clung to Jon, reluctant to release him.  “We fought all the time, as siblings will,” she said, “but I loved you with all my soul.  I will never stop thanking God for his gift of returning you from the dead.”

Jon whispered in her ear, “Your husband is very handsome.  I like him very much.” Mary clung tighter to her long lost brother.  They entered James’s coach and started for Amy’s house.  All four of them were full of trepidation.

“My two boys are at Amy’s house,” Mary said, hoping to relieve the tension.  “I can’t wait for you to meet them.”

The coach stopped in front of Amy’s townhouse.  “We live just next door,” James said.  “Would you like us to come in with you or would you rather we went home for a short while?”

Please come in with us,” Vic decided.  Jon nodded in agreement.  They carried their bags with them, assuming that they would stay with Amy, but the plan was that they would stay with Mary.  James said nothing.  They could retrieve the bags later.

James climbed the few steps and knocked on the front door.  In a short moment the door was opened by a very handsome gentleman, who bore a strong resemblance to James.  Jon remembered that his sisters had married first cousins.  The gentleman let them in and James introduced Peter Hanover, his cousin, to them.  They all shook hands politely, but Peter looked at Jon and said warmly, “Welcome to my home, Brother.”

“Thank you,” Jon mumbled.  He was more than attracted to his new brother in law and he felt the familiar stirring in his loins.  He could not help but wonder if he was doomed to fall in love with all of Amy’s husbands.

“Amy is waiting in the front room,” Peter said.  “She’s quite frightened.”  He looked into Vic’s eyes.  “I am also,” he added.

Vic put his arm around Peter’s shoulder.  “Please, don’t be frightened,” he said.
“I have no desire to destroy your happiness.  In fact, I came to deliver our annulment papers to Amy personally.”

Jon detected a sudden relaxation in Peter’s facial muscles.  They all followed Peter to the front room.  When he opened the door, there stood Amy waiting for them.  She was more beautiful than ever, but she was ashen white and obviously frightened to death.  She stood there frozen, not knowing what to do.  Finally Vic walked up to her and embraced her in a brotherly hug.  He made no attempt to kiss her, not even on the cheek.  Little by little Vic could feel her relaxing, and she hugged him back.  The worst was over.

Amy greeted Jon more sisterly, and she sobbed violently.  When everyone was calmed down, Mary went to retrieve the six children from the playroom.  She introduced both men as “uncles.”

Vic and Jon stayed in London exactly one week.  Their sisters and their husbands could not get enough of their stories of how the two men survived on a deserted island.  It took a lot of restraint for them not to accidently slip and admit that they had a sexual relationship on the island.  However, once or twice, without saying anything incriminating, Jon was convinced that he saw a look pass between James and Peter, which indicated to him that they had their suspicions.  He wondered if his two brothers in law had ever had sex with another man or boy, especially in school.  Well, he certainly wasn’t going to ask.

The very first night of their visit, when James showed them to their room, he apologized that they would have to share the room and a bed.  He explained that he and Mary only had one guest room.

“We don’t mind at all,” Jon said, too enthusiastically.  That was the first time Vic discerned “the look” and wondered himself.

On the last night before their departure, the four men went into the drawing room for a cigar after dinner.  Vic and Jon did not smoke but they joined Peter and James in the usual post dinner custom.

When the cigars were lit, and the four men were alone in the room, Peter said, “James and I are very curious about something.  We would like to ask you a question, and you need not answer if you don’t wish to, but we would appreciate a yes or no answer.  Do you mind?”

Vic spoke first and said, “I don’t mind as long as whatever we discuss in this room never leaves the room.”

“Here, here,” Jon echoed.

“Very well,” James piped in.  “We were wondering how long you two could be alone on a deserted island without having sex with each other.”

There it was; out on the table.  They didn’t bother to ask if they had sex, but rather, how long before they had sex.  Vic was too shocked to reply, and anyway, he didn’t have to, but Jon was related to these two gentlemen and he felt obligated to answer.  He decided to tell the truth and add a little white lie.

“It was very early on,” he said, “but now that we are off the island, we have returned to our heterosexual ways.”  Vic was shocked at Jon’s response, but somehow he refrained from contradicting him.

“Why did you ask us that?” Vic asked Peter and James.

“That’s a fair question,” Peter said.  “James and I were roommates at Eton.  We spent many a horny night alone in a small room, and the inevitable happened.”  Peter smiled at James.  “I might add that it didn’t tarnish our futures, and it was quite enjoyable when it happened.”

“I concur,” James agreed.

“As long as we are all being candid,” Jon observed, “have you ever enjoyed each other since leaving school?”

“Have you two imbibed since leaving the island?” James asked without answering Jon’s question.

Before Jon could give his brothers in law another white lie, Vic spoke up.  “Yes, and with much pleasure.”

Peter started to laugh and answered Jon’s question.  “Of course, we enjoy each other often.  Once a man has tasted the forbidden fruit, it’s hard to give it up.  Don’t you agree James?”

Jon looked like he had been hit in the head with a ship’s boom.  “But we are unwed,” he said by way of protest.

“And we are faithful to our wives,” Peter said.  “It is only to ourselves that we make love.  Somehow it has developed that our wives have “the curse” at the same time every month, and that’s when we give ourselves the pleasure of our company.  I’m sorry if we shock you, but not sorry that we indulge in so happy a pursuit.”

“You don’t shock me,” Vic said.  “I’m happy for you.  I had no knowledge of the joy of male love until Jon and I were stranded on the island.  He, on the other hand, had been my brother’s lover for years before that.”

Jon blushed a deep crimson, and James and Peter could sense his misery.

“Don’t be upset, Brother.  Our discussion here will never leave any of our lips,” Peter assured him.

Jon was terribly attracted to both his brothers in law.  In fact, the air in the room was full of sexual tension.  Nevertheless the conversation shifted somehow to the politics of the day, and sex was never again mentioned during Jon and Vic’s sojourn.  More’s the pity, since all four men desired each other, but none of them had the courage to pursue the matter.
